2021·Scientific reports·N Boqué, R M Valls, A Pedret, et al

Relative absorption of silicon from different formulations of dietary supplements: a pilot randomized, double-blind, crossover post-prandial study.

RCTn = 5

Pilot randomized, double-blind, crossover study comparing the relative absorption of silicon from different dietary supplement formulations in 5 healthy men. No significant differences in total urinary silicon excretion were found among the three formulations, indicating equivalent relative absorption.

Choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid supplementation as an adjunct to calcium/vitamin D3 stimulates markers of bone formation in osteopenic females: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

RCTn = 136Joint Bone Health

This randomized, placebo-controlled trial investigated the effect of choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid (ch-OSA) supplementation alongside calcium and vitamin D3 on bone turnover markers and bone mineral density in osteopenic females. The study found a significant increase in the bone formation marker PINP at 12 months for the 6 and 12 mg Si doses, suggesting a potential beneficial effect on bone collagen.

In vitro evaluation of different organic matrices used to modulate silicon bioavailability

In vitroJoint Bone Health Immunity

In vitro study comparing different commercial dietary supplements containing stabilized orthosilicic acid (OSA) for their bioaccessibility, bioavailability, and safety in a model of human intestinal epithelium. The choline-formulated OSA showed higher bioavailability but increased cell permeability, while the collagen-formulated OSA was deemed the best Si dietary supplement.

Enhancing food safety and security through silicon-based approaches in pre-harvest and post-harvest pest management.

Review

This review discusses the role of silicon (Si) in enhancing food security through pest management strategies. It highlights Si's ability to mitigate biotic and abiotic stresses in plants, improve stress resistance, and support biological control by attracting natural pest enemies. Various Si sources, such as diatomaceous earth and nano-SiO, are suggested as eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic pesticides.
