2008·International journal of oral and maxillofacial surgery·T H Al-Khateeb, Y Nusair

Effect of the proteolytic enzyme serrapeptase on swelling, pain and trismus after surgical extraction of mandibular third molars.

RCTn = 24Inflammation

Prospective, intra-individual, randomized, double-blind, cross-over study on 24 individuals to assess serrapeptase's effect on postoperative swelling, pain, and trismus after third molar surgery. Serrapeptase significantly reduced cheek swelling and pain intensity on the 2nd, 3rd, and 7th postoperative days compared to placebo.

2003·Respirology (Carlton, Vic.)·Seiichi Nakamura, Yasushi Hashimoto, Masashi Mikami, et al

Effect of the proteolytic enzyme serrapeptase in patients with chronic airway disease.

RCTn = 29

Open-labelled trial with 29 patients with chronic airway diseases, comparing oral serrapeptase treatment to a non-treatment control group over 4 weeks. Serrapeptase treatment significantly decreased sputum weight, viscosity, elasticity, and neutrophil count, while increasing mucociliary transportability index.

Evaluation of Serratia peptidase in acute or chronic inflammation of otorhinolaryngology pathology: a multicentre, double-blind, randomized trial versus placebo.

RCTn = 193Inflammation

Multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 193 subjects with acute or chronic ear, nose, or throat disorders. Serratia peptidase treatment led to significant symptom regression and greater efficacy compared to placebo, with good tolerance observed.

The treatment of breast engorgement with Serrapeptase (Danzen): a randomised double-blind controlled trial.

RCTn = 70Womens Health

RCT evaluating the anti-inflammatory enzyme drug Danzen (Serrapeptase) on 70 patients with breast engorgement. Danzen was superior to placebo for improving breast pain, swelling, and induration, with statistically significant results. No adverse reactions were reported.

[Reduction of postoperative swelling. Objective measurement of swelling of the upper ankle joint in treatment with serrapeptase-- a prospective study].

RCTn = 66Inflammation

Prospective RCT of 66 patients with lateral ligament rupture treated surgically, studying the effect of serrapeptase on post-operative swelling and pain. The group receiving serrapeptase showed a 50% reduction in swelling by the third post-operative day, with statistically significant results compared to control groups. Pain reduction correlated with swelling reduction.

A multi-centre, double-blind study of serrapeptase versus placebo in post-antrotomy buccal swelling.

RCTn = 174Inflammation

A multi-centre, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 174 patients investigated the efficacy of serrapeptase in reducing post-antrotomy buccal swelling. Serrapeptase-treated patients experienced significantly less swelling compared to placebo at all observation points up to the 5th day post-operation. No side-effects were reported.
