Safety and tolerability of a dried aqueous spearmint extract.

Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial evaluated the safety and tolerability of a dried aqueous spearmint extract standardized to rosmarinic acid in healthy adults with age-associated memory impairment. Ingestion of 600 and 900 mg/day for 90 days showed no significant effects on hormone levels or safety parameters, and no severe adverse events were reported.

The study investigated the effects of oral supplementation with rosmarinic acid (RA) on seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (SAR) in a clinical trial and its anti-inflammatory mechanism in animal models. RA supplementation significantly decreased symptom responder rates and reduced neutrophil and eosinophil numbers in nasal lavage fluid compared to placebo. In animal models, RA showed anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting neutrophil infiltration and reducing reactive oxygen radical production.

Subcritical Water Extraction of Rosmarinic Acid from Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis L.) and Its Effect on Plant Cell Wall Constituents

Study

The study investigated subcritical water extraction (SWE) for recovering rosmarinic acid (RA) from lemon balm as an alternative to hydro-alcoholic extraction. SWE at 100 °C was as effective as 50% ethanol, but higher temperatures led to RA degradation. SWE increased extract yield by degrading plant material, suggesting its efficiency for extracting RA and other antioxidants for use in food supplements.
