The diuretic effect in human subjects of an extract of Taraxacum officinale folium over a single day.

RCTn = 17

Pilot study investigating the diuretic effect of Taraxacum officinale (dandelion) extract in 17 human subjects. Significant increases in urinary frequency and excretion ratio were observed after the first and second doses, respectively, but not after the third dose.

Reversal of heavy metal-induced antibiotic resistance by dandelion root extracts and taraxasterol.

In vitro

The study assessed the effects of dandelion water extracts and taraxasterol on heavy metal-induced antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli. Dandelion root extracts and taraxasterol significantly reversed the antibiotic resistance induced by heavy metals, blocking the activities of β-lactamase and acetyltransferase, which are related to antibiotic resistance.

Protective Effects of Taraxacum officinale L. (Dandelion) Root Extract in Experimental Acute on Chronic Liver Failure

Animal studyn = 25

The study investigated the protective effects of Taraxacum officinale root extract (TOERE) on acute on chronic liver failure in a rat model. TOERE reduced serum liver injury markers, renal tests, and oxidative stress tests, and diminished liver tissue injury, suggesting its hepatoprotective effect.

Effect of Dandelion root extract on growth performance, immune function and bacterial community in weaned pigs

Animal studyImmunity Gut Health

The study evaluated the effect of dietary Dandelion root extract on weaned pigs, finding decreased diarrhoea frequency and increased propionate and butyrate concentrations in faecal samples. It also improved immune function by increasing IL-6 and decreasing IL-4 concentrations in serum, and altered the faecal bacterial community.

Dandelion Root and Lemongrass Extracts Induce Apoptosis, Enhance Chemotherapeutic Efficacy, and Reduce Tumour Xenograft Growth In Vivo in Prostate Cancer

Animal studyMens Health

The study investigates the anticancer effects of dandelion root and lemongrass extracts on prostate cancer. Both extracts enhanced the efficacy of chemotherapeutics taxol and mitoxantrone by inducing apoptosis and reducing tumor growth in prostate cancer xenograft models.

Dandelion root extract suppressed gastric cancer cells proliferation and migration through targeting lncRNA-CCAT1.

In vitro

The study investigates the effects of dandelion root extract (DRE) on gastric cancer cells, showing that DRE suppresses proliferation and migration of these cells without inducing toxicity in noncancerous cells. The mechanism involves downregulation of the lncRNA CCAT1, which is associated with tumorigenesis.

Dandelion root extract affects colorectal cancer proliferation and survival through the activation of multiple death signalling pathways

In vitroInflammation

In vitro study of aqueous dandelion root extract (DRE) on colon cancer cell models. DRE induced programmed cell death in over 95% of colon cancer cells and retarded growth in human colon xenograft models by more than 90%. The extract activated multiple death pathways in cancer cells, suggesting its potential as a non-toxic anti-cancer alternative.

Dandelion Extracts Protect Human Skin Fibroblasts from UVB Damage and Cellular Senescence

In vitroSkin Hair Health Longevity

In vitro study showing that dandelion leaf and flower extracts protect human skin fibroblasts from UVB damage and H2O2-induced cellular senescence. The extracts inhibited MMP activity, ROS generation, and stimulated glutathione production, offering protection against skin photoageing.

Efficient Induction of Extrinsic Cell Death by Dandelion Root Extract in Human Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML) Cells

In vitro

The study evaluates the efficacy of dandelion root extract in inducing programmed cell death in human CMML cell lines. Dandelion root extract efficiently induces apoptosis and autophagy in these cell lines without significant toxicity to non-cancerous cells, suggesting potential as a non-toxic alternative to conventional chemotherapy.

The Efficacy of Dandelion Root Extract in Inducing Apoptosis in Drug-Resistant Human Melanoma Cells

In vitro

The study investigates the efficacy of dandelion root extract (DRE) in inducing apoptosis in drug-resistant human melanoma cells. DRE specifically induces apoptosis in A375 human melanoma cells without toxicity to noncancerous cells, activating caspase-8 and generating reactive oxygen species. The extract also shows potential when combined with metformin in resistant G361 melanoma cells.
