Effect of Calcium Citrate Versus Calcium Carbonate on Parathyroid Hormone Levels in Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials investigated the effect of calcium citrate versus calcium carbonate on PTH levels in bariatric surgery patients. The analysis included 227 participants from four studies and found that a single dose of calcium citrate significantly reduced PTH levels compared to calcium carbonate, although no significant difference was observed in chronic interventions.
Evaluating adherence, tolerability and safety of oral calcium citrate in elderly osteopenic subjects: a real-life non-interventional, prospective, multicenter study
This non-interventional, prospective, multicenter study evaluated adherence, safety, and tolerability of 500 mg daily calcium citrate supplementation in 268 elderly osteopenic subjects. Mean adherence was 76.6%, with adverse reactions reported by 3.9% of subjects, primarily gastrointestinal disorders. Blood pressure decreased slightly from baseline to follow-up.
Calcium Citrate Versus Calcium Carbonate in the Management of Chronic Hypoparathyroidism: A Randomized, Double‐Blind, Crossover Clinical Trial
This randomized, double-blind, crossover trial compared calcium citrate (Ca-Cit) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in 24 adults with chronic hypoparathyroidism. Ca-Cit was associated with a reduction in urinary oxalate excretion and less constipation compared to CaCO3, but no difference in serum calcium levels or quality of life scores was observed.
Effect of calcium citrate vs calcium carbonate on elevated parathyroid hormone after Roux‐en‐Y gastric bypass. A double‐blinded, randomized trial
Double-blinded, randomized trial comparing the effects of calcium citrate versus calcium carbonate on elevated parathyroid hormone levels in patients after Roux‐en‐Y gastric bypass. The study investigates the impact of 1200 mg elementary calcium on bone health.
Effect of various calcium salts on non-heme iron bioavailability in fasted women of childbearing age.
A randomized single-blinded trial on 27 women of childbearing age tested the effect of various calcium salts on non-heme iron bioavailability. Calcium citrate significantly decreased non-heme iron bioavailability compared to calcium chloride control, suggesting that the type of calcium salt affects iron absorption.
Preparation and properties of chitosan/gelatin/supersaturated calcium citrate scaffolds crosslinked by dehydrogenation heat treatment method.
The study prepared chitosan/gelatin/supersaturated calcium citrate scaffolds using a dehydrogenation heat treatment method. The scaffolds showed improved mechanical strength and osteogenic activity, promoting cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. In SD rats, scaffolds with 25 mM Ca2+ demonstrated a stronger osteogenic effect in repairing skull defects compared to chitosan/gelatin scaffolds.
Calcium citrate: role, function and clinical applications
This review explores the mechanisms, clinical uses, and therapeutic applications of calcium citrate. It is preferred in situations like chronic hypoparathyroidism, osteoporosis, hypochlorhydria, and post-bariatric surgery due to its absorption advantages and role in supporting bone density.
