Cytokine Levels After Consumption of a Medicinal Agaricus blazei Murill-Based Mushroom Extract, AndoSan, in Patients with Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis in a Randomized Single-Blinded Placebo-Controlled Study.

RCTn = 50Inflammation

RCT examining the effects of Agaricus blazei Murill-based mushroom extract AndoSan on cytokine levels in 50 patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The study found limited reduction in systemic cytokine levels, suggesting marginal anti-inflammatory effects, with other mechanisms like anti-allergic and antioxidant activities potentially contributing to clinical benefits.

Effects of alpha-glucans from Agaricus bisporus on ex vivo cytokine production by LPS and PHA-stimulated PBMCs; a placebo-controlled study in slightly hypercholesterolemic subjects.

RCTn = 56Immunity

A double-blind randomized trial with 56 mildly hypercholesterolemic subjects evaluated the effects of consuming alpha-glucans from Agaricus bisporus on cytokine production by PBMCs. The intervention group showed a 69% reduction in LPS-induced TNFalpha production compared to the control group, with no effect on IL-1beta and IL-6, and no significant Th1-Th2 skewing.

The mushroom Agaricus Blazei Murill in combination with metformin and gliclazide improves insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes: a randomized, double-blinded, and placebo-controlled clinical trial.

RCTn = 72Hormone Health

RCT of 72 Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes comparing Agaricus blazei Murill extract to placebo for 12 weeks. The ABM group showed significantly lower HOMA-IR index and increased plasma adiponectin concentration, suggesting improved insulin resistance.

Natural killer cell activity and quality of life were improved by consumption of a mushroom extract, Agaricus blazei Murill Kyowa, in gynecological cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

RCTn = 100Immunity

RCT involving 100 gynecological cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, comparing those with and without oral consumption of Agaricus blazei Murill Kyowa (ABMK). The ABMK-treated group showed significantly higher natural killer cell activity and improved chemotherapy-associated side effects such as appetite, alopecia, emotional stability, and general weakness.

Impact of Agaricus bisporus Mushroom Consumption on Gut Health Markers in Healthy Adults.

RCTn = 32Gut Health

A randomized open-label crossover study in 32 healthy adults compared the effects of consuming protein-matched amounts of Agaricus bisporus mushrooms versus meat on gut health markers. The mushroom diet led to greater gastrointestinal symptoms initially, higher stool weight, and altered fecal microbiota composition, with increased Bacteroidetes and decreased Firmicutes. No differences were found in breath hydrogen, stool frequency, consistency, fecal pH, or SCFA concentrations between diets.

Impact of Agaricus bisporus mushroom consumption on satiety and food intake.

RCTn = 32Nutrition

Randomized open-label crossover study with 32 healthy participants comparing satiety and food intake between Agaricus bisporus mushrooms and meat. Participants reported less hunger and greater fullness after consuming mushrooms, but no significant differences in energy intake were observed over ten days. Mushroom consumption increased fiber intake, significantly on day 2.

A phase I trial of mushroom powder in patients with biochemically recurrent prostate cancer: Roles of cytokines and myeloid-derived suppressor cells for Agaricus bisporus-induced prostate-specific antigen responses.

RCTn = 36Mens Health

Phase I trial of white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) powder in 36 patients with biochemically recurrent prostate cancer. The study evaluated the effects on serum PSA levels and tolerability. An 11% overall PSA response rate was observed, with some patients achieving complete or partial response. Therapy was associated with declines in myeloid-derived suppressor cells and modulation of cytokine levels.

Studies on the deodorization by mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) extract of garlic extract-induced oral malodor.

In vitro

The study investigated the deodorizing effect of Agaricus bisporus (mushroom) extract on oral malodor induced by garlic consumption. Gas chromatography analysis showed a significant reduction in methane- and allylthiols after mushroom extract rinsing. In-vitro analysis suggested a faster reaction of methanethiol with mushroom extract compared to allylthiol.
